Today we are going to talk a bit about your “out door” as part of the brain gut series continues.  Today I am going to show you how spinal biomechanics and defecation are intimately related to good or poor physiologic function and may result in illness.  The human spine has 5 lumbar verterae and one block of bone distal to it called the sacrum.  The sacrum forms the back bony wall of the pelvis.

Brain Gut 16: Adrenal Fatigue Rx

What is Adrenal Fatigue at its core? Many websites will tell you it is an adrenal gland function problem that is best assayed by a salivary adrenal stress panel. I wont and I do not. The cause of adrenal fatigue is a brain injury at the hypothalamus all caused by bad signaling. My Adrenal Fatigue Rx is best called Metabolic Neurosurgery: It is all about energy and energy utilization that allows for perfect signaling of environmental signals. When your energy is bad your signaling falls off a cliff. The ASI is just like a gauge on a car. It tells you some info but it does not tell you why it is happening. How we understand adrenal dysfunction in 2012 has radically changed because of a relatively new science called neurohumoral-immunology. What does this mean?

It means adrenal fatigue at its core is a brain illness and not an adrenal gland problem.

What is the PVN? How do we know if our PVN is shut off? What are some of the symptoms? We can’t sleep, our guts do not work, our body composition goes way off, we sweat at the wrong times, we develop cognitive haze, blurred vision, migraines, and reactive hypoglycemia. Many times fatigue is only relieved by eating foods we should not. It also means we have lost allosteric control of leptin!

Brain Gut 14: Personal Ground Zero

READERS SUMMARY: HOW DO YOU FIND OPTIMAL? MEET INGER, AN AMAZING EPI-PALEO STARFISH. HOW DO YOU FINE TUNE YOUR BRAIN, THE INSTRUMENT THAT YOU SENSE THE WORLD WITH? WHAT IS THE BIOLOGIC CORRELATE BEHIND TUNING YOUR INSTRUMENT? WHERE DOES THE MAGIC OF LIFE REALLY OCCUR?     THE EMOTIONAL GEEK: From a thread on my forum, written by some pretty amazing women with deep seated issues came some clarity. I feel it was something I said that sparked this flame over the past 18 months. I wanted to share it right now in this part of the Brain Gut series. Inger has found optimal not by subjecting herself to her pain, but by understanding her pain and fine-tuning her instrument (aka her brain) by using food as her medicine and not her entertainment. How did she do it? She listened to her inner sense, and found her personal ground zero. She fine tuned her instrument eating Mackerel Head smoothies and raw beef heart salad. She shared it all in her own voice long before she knew about the Epi-paleo Rx. She intuitively knew what to do because she listened to her body. She does not know why but she also does […]

WHY METABOLIC NEUROPHYSIOLOGY = OPTIMAL HEALTH?     Many have asked me how I have the physical and mental ability to do all I do.  It is pretty simple. On my own journey to Optimal I stumbled into some neural science that showed me where optimal nutrition meets optimal performance of all types.  Since I found this evolutionary use, all my abilities have increased exponentially.  I can do things now that I could not do even in my prime years when I was in college, medical school, or in neurosurgical residency.  I mentioned this when I was in Austin in March. This blog series is my goal of fulfilling a promise I made in March 2012 at Paleo Fx that there was a lot more to the paleolithic template than the current tribe believed.  It was there, […]

We recently heard about nutrient density in the Brain gut 5 blog.  It seems all of a sudden it has become a hot topic in the paleosphere too now.  The one issue however that is not well understood or talked about enough in my opinion is putting this key factor in proper evolutionary and scientific context.  When someone uses the FDA and USDA massive databases to look at foods with the highest nutrient densities to make large assumptions what is best and what is not, you might be smart to begin to question if that is a wise assumption to begin with.  Let me explain.  The tables are measuring nutrient density of foods against other foods and not against the species of animals eating those foods.  What it does not do is taking into […]

I am neither a science person, so is there any way to explain it in less technical terms?     BEFORE WE BEGIN TAKE A LOOK HERE AND TELL ME IF YOU THINK EVOLUTION HAS A PLAN FOR THIS?   I hope everyone realizes that artificial light has only been around on our planet since 1924.   Just so we are clear. BRAIN GUT 10: The Other Trip through the Rabbit Hole:

My name is Danielle Thatcher and here is my story of the rabbit hole I fell into with MJ when we met Dr. Kruse on his vacation:   When I first sat down to write about my experience with meeting Dr. K, I had the highest of hopes of writing something that would and could inspire many. But when I did sit down to write…. I had nothing.  Literally, nothing. My mind was blank.  I take that back, I have the notes that Dr. Kruse so willingly wrote down for me and the notes that MJ took as well.  But I spent an entire day with this great man, and my mind is blank. Pretty scary for a 45 year old woman!   Before I forget, this is only one of the supplements Dr. Kruse asked me to consider with my doctor for me. Pregnenolone.   If you have insufficient levels of pregnenolone, you can have memory loss, sleep disorders, depression, fatigue, symptoms that mimic Alzheimer’s and other debilitating conditions. I am experiencing many of these symptoms, so I am sure to take my supplements and just waiting for everything to “click” and this machine to start functioning again properly.   The good news […]

Brain Gut 9: What Really Killed Michael Jackson

Today, we are going to dive into the gut flora story a bit deeper than we did in our first gut flora post to help you understand how a a change in gut flora might lead to changes in your health by altering your hormone panel. Obesity is an inflammatory brain condition. Where does the infection come from? The gut flora actually is what causes humans to become fat. It has to due with shear numbers and the species of bacteria in our gut. There is a particular flora that produces adiposity and obesity in humans. These bacteria make something called FIAF (Fasting induced adipose factor) that control this process. This factor blocks lipoprotein lipase (LPL) in fat cells. LPL allows us to convert dietary Free Fatty Acids carried in lipoproteins into neutral fats that are stored in adipocytes.

Non Geeks: Our gut bacteria makes humans fat.

Geek Alert: The FIAF is made by our liver, muscles, and our small bowel wall when food sources are in short supply. This is the signal to stop storing fat in our fat cells when food is scarce. What is not well appreciated by many is that the FIAF in our intestinal wall is controlled 100% by our gut flora. When we have a simplified gut flora it favors fat cell creation. When our gut flora is complex and healthy, it has 100 trillion cells with 250 species. We tend not to make fat in this instance either! Moreover, when the bacteria are active metabolically due to the presence of simple sugars, production of FIAF ceases, and fat creation is signaled. This implies that our gut flora is directly tied to fat creation in humans. The gut flora’s action is directly signaled to the brain via the afferent nerve fibers in the vagus nerve. In those newly created fat cells, a protein called leptin is also produced, and acts as a score keeper for the brain of how much fat is stored in the body. This messenger is sent to the brain around midnight when we are sleeping allowing the brain to assess total energy balance in the body.

Many of you know I believe obesity if an inflammatory disease of the brain. Where this disease begins may surprise some of you. It begins in our gut flora. How does this happen? Read this link! Sub optimal bacteria which contain bacterial toxins called lipopolysaccharides (LPS) which are found in bacterial cell membranes. As gut LPS rises, it has been shown to cause a rise in serum leptin levels. Once leptin levels are raised high enough it stimulates SOCS 3 signaling in the hypothalamus to cause LR.

Brain Gut 6: Epi-Paleo Rx

This blog followed a very popular July 2012 Webinar that I put on for my members a few days ago. The webinar was over two hours long and had a lot of Q & A done after it as well. I promised my members I would get a quick blog post up for them on some of the core materials we covered. Today’s blog is delivering on that promise.

How to consider eating the Epi-Paleo Rx: Always Respect circadian cycles and eat according to seasonality, Lots of good quality proteins (see below), Lots of good quality fats (grass-fed/pastured animal fats – lard, tallow), Liberal uses of seafood broths and bone broth made from ocean and grass-fed animals (to heal the gut), and fermented vegetables and/or probiotics (to repopulate the gut with an Optimal Human flora)

Brain Gut 5: Paradigm Drifts Paradigm Shifts–Epi-Paleo

Geeks: The implications of Brain Gut 4 mean that to develop a brain seafood is required part of the program to maintain it. Nutrients and many other environmental factors have also been found to influence epigenetic programing of our DNA either directly or indirectly via metabolic sensors. Peroxisomal proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR’s), the vitamin D receptors, and the retinoid X receptors (RXR), and the retinoic acid receptors (RAR) are all examples of the nuclear receptors that interact with the brain cell membranes to control inflammation and metabolism all over our bodies. It turns out that PPAR’s are the receptors that are at the crossroads of where inflammation and metabolism actually cross. These are specialized lipid sensors that pay attention to our balance of omega 6 and 3 levels. 3% of the human genome is directly or indirectly controlled by the endocrine functions of the Vitamin D system. This shows you how environmental signals are intertwined into the expression of DNA in humans. The Epi-Paleo Rx controls inflammation at a hormonal level in the brain better than the more famous paleo diet.

Non Geeks: What we eat is really damn important when you have 3 lbs of lipid in your head called a brain. If you eat outside our design you get sick.

Brain Gut 4: What was Homo’s Solution?

The paleo community has the “Paleo Solution”, and it is a great introductory book to a lifestyle that will improve people to a higher plane of health than we have while eating a standard American diet found in our western world. It is clear from fossil data humans were in better physical shape in the late paleolithic before the Younger Dryas occurred as well. It appears that this deep freeze caused massive dietary change in the homo species from predominate hunter gatherers culture to and agrarian culture because of rapid climate change and elimination of the great megafauna from our food chains. The focus of this series, however, is focused upon when we jumped from purely primate to mainly homo species and to see what diet is really best for the rapid encephalization of our species. I am not convinced the modern paleolithic diet that is quite popular now fits that bill at all. The reason I bring this forth, is because I treat very sick and ill homo sapiens every day. ‘Eating paleo’ may just not reverse their health. The proof of this is found on every single popular paleo forum you can visit. As a surgeon, I need something that really works in the most resistant cases. That is where I discovered the Epi-Paleo Rx.

In my specialty of spine surgery, this is especially true when we are dealing with cranial and spinal pathology. As a neurosurgeon these neolithic diseases are the ones I am most focused in on in my clinic. Evolution is in large part about epigenetic to cellular communication; it’s comparing notes and copying and pasting new genetic recipes to create a new dish. When we understand how that dish was created we gain deep insight of how to to keep that dish tasting crisp and fresh every time we replicate it.

Brain Gut 3: Look In The Past To See Your Prologue

READERS SUMMARY:   1. WHAT ARE THE EVOLUTIONARY IMPLICATIONS OF A LEAKY GUT AS A POSITIVE ADAPTATION AT OUR SPECIES ORIGIN? 2. WHY DID BIPEDALISM ARISE BEFORE BRAINS IN HUMANS? 3. DID THE CLIMATE AND TECTONIC PLATES DICTATE THE EPIGENETIC CHANGES IN THOSE TRANSITIONAL PRIMATES? 4. DID RAPID CHANGES IN INNATE AND CELL MEDIATED IMMUNITY OCCUR BEFORE THE BODY PLAN CHANGES IN PRIMATES? When our ancestor primates acquired this leaky gut mentioned in the last blog Brain Gut 2, it allowed them to assimilate a lot of new genetic material that would help them navigate their new surroundings. This genetic material was assimilated very quickly and in a short amount of time. Why do I say this? In the East African Rift during ‘homo’ speciation their was massive climate change. In times of environmental change species are subjected to something called punctuated equilibrium. This theory states for most of evolutionary time species are in an equilibrium with their environment and then something sudden happens to force adaptation. We saw this in the K-T event, the Young Dryas, and when primates evolved to humans during the late Pilocene. It appears that by studying the difference between primates and human DNA we […]

Brain Gut 2: Viral Marketing

READERS SUMMARY: 1. To discover the unknown we must use the known to guide our thoughts to see the future. 2.  How should we think about evolution and health now?  Counterintuitive is an axiomatic cognitive ability  required for neurosurgical residency training and that is why I chose to tackle this problem in this fashion. 3.  If we want to explore the mystery of our clade we need to go back to the things that separate us from them that we know to be true today.  The knowns are that our EQ (encephalization quotient) exploded rapidly.  WHY? 4.  Is our past really our new prologue?   Todays blog is to show you how Factor X was made actionable in bring man from ape.  Most of you know, I believe it was due to a faster epigenetic plan that altered the mammalian body plan.  What most do not know it was the result of viral marketing.  This is not the viral marketing of today’s social media platform.  This is where viral marketing was truly invented.  First created in our oceans,  and eventually incorporated into the DNA of life.  Do you think this hyperbole?  One drop of sea water has a million bacteria […]

Brain Gut 1: Who Are We, Really?

READERS SUMMARY: 1. WHY CAN’T FOSSILS, BIOCHEMISTRY, TEETH, GEOLOGY, PALEOANTHROPOLOGY TELL US WHERE WE CAME FROM? 2. ARE WE REALLY PILOCENE OR PALEOLITHIC BEINGS? 3. DO WE STRADDLE THE FENCE OF BOTH ERA’S OR IS ONE MORE IMPORTANT? 4. HOW MIGHT NEUROSURGERY GIVE A NEW PERSPECTIVE TO THESE MYSTERIES? 5. IS HOMO HERE BECAUSE OF VIRAL MARKETING?   If you are paleoanthropologist or archeologist you think fossils are the Rosetta Stone for discovering the path that human evolution took. If you are proteomic evolutionary biochemist you think molecular arrays are the best way to decipher the tea leaves of Mother Nature ways. If you are a geneticist you think the RNA/DNA is Holy Grail of human evolution. If you are dental specialist, like University of Arkansas professor, Dr. Peter Ungar you think it’s all about the mammalian teeth. Today’s blogosphere likes to define evolutionary thinking by thinking about the Paleolithic epoch and how it might have shaped the hominid tree. The paleolithic shaped the tree to be sure, but had nothing to do with planting the acorn. The paleolithic diet has been championed best, in my view, by Dr. Loren Cordain’s sustained efforts over the last 30 years. His work […]
